What are Flower Essences?

Wendy M. Cooper

What are flower essences?

Flowers have specific vibratory frequencies which are referred to as their essence just as every human has their own individual essence. Flower essences are liquid extracts used to address profound issues of emotional well-being, soul development, and mind-body health. They are meant to be taken often.

Flower essences are dilute, potentized herbal infusions or decoctions, prepared from wildflowers or pristine garden blossoms. They are made directly in nature’s laboratory where the four alchemical elements of earth, water, air and fire are found in balance. The fifth element is the sensitive awareness and attunement of the preparer as she connects with the spirit and the essence of the flower through the love the plant elicits from her heart.

Flower essences work on the principle of energetic resonance. There are positive patterns in the energy field of a flower during full bloom that are infused and preserved in water from the sun or moon light.

These remedies expand our understanding of health care, recognizing the relationship between body, ,mind and soul, and the interweaving of spiritual, mental, emotional and physical aspects of wellness.

Using flower essences raises our own vibration when we use them. Our vibration or energy level corresponds to our wellbeing.

Flower essences are non-toxic and can even be given to children and animals.

Flower essences are a part of an emerging field of subtle energy medicine, which also includes homeopathy, acupuncture, color therapy, therapeutic touch and similar modalities.

How are flower essences prepared?

Blossoms are gathered in the early morning of a clear day. Floating on the surface of a bowl of water, they are irradiated by the warmth and light of the sun for several hours. This process creates an energetic imprint of the etheric energy pattern of the flower in the water, embodying the healing essence and archetype of that plant. This “mother essence” is preserved with alcohol and then further diluted and potentized to form the “stock essence,” which is sold in stores and to practitioners.

The origin of flower essences

During the early 1930s, Dr. Edward Bach, a prominent British physician, realized that for most of his patients, emotional and mental factors predisposed them to physical ailments.

He began his career as an orthodox physician and then later became a homeopathic physician. As an intuitive healer and practitioner Bach constantly sought a simpler, more natural way of healing that dealt with how people’s personality traits related to their illnesses

He was inspired to spend time in nature studying plants – where they grew, what they looked like, and how they tasted. He discovered that that particular flowers affected him emotionally in certain ways. On impulse, he sipped the dew that collected in the petals and leaves. He found that the dew from each plant held a distinct healing effect.

He discovered that by holding his hand over a flower would help him in some way because of vibration (energetic signature), its individual nature, and its spiritual qualities.

Bach believed that emotions, such as anger, hate, and fear wear down the immune system leading to physical breakdown and disease. He concluded that flowers have an energy that can balance human discord, reestablishing the link between body and soul, nature and spirit. He based his remedies on the theory that one should treat the patient, not the disease.

He developed the 38 original Bach Flower Remedies.
